Maastricht is a city located on the southern tip of the Netherlands and has been known for ít universities ( Maastricht University, Zuyd Hogeschool, Maastricht School of Management) and the diverse culture. Maastricht is a very cool place for students. It is not as crowded and noisy as big cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam but still has many forms of entertainment. Therefore, you can focus on your study while enjoying a true student life.
Hereby is the list of 5 things that we think you should check when arriving in this city
1.The area where you live
If you found your accommodation here via the internet, now it’s time to actually explore the area. Is the room the same as what you observed in pictures? Is the furniture still in good condition? Is the neighborhood safe and peaceful or crowded and noisy? (Flattrust can help you check for these problems before your arrival. Click here). Take a walk around the area to see if there are any interesting places nearby such as gyms, parks, supermarkets, bus stops,… that you can make use of them in the future.
2.The distance from your place to school
If you are going to the city for studying, you should definitely check the distance from your house to your school, and find the most convenient route to try. By doing this, you can be familiar with the route, as well as estimate the time it takes you to go to school. Therefore, there’s no need to be worried about being late or lost on your first day to school.
3.The city center
In Maastricht, the most crowded area should be the city center where many shops and stores are located. There are 2 town squares in the heart of Maastricht: The Vrijthof and The Markt. The Vrijthof regularly hosts large festivals at various times throughout the year, including autumn and winter festivals. It is also known for many nice restaurants and cafes, located opposite to the massive St Servaas Church and St Jan’s Cathedral. At the Markt square, the weekly market is held every Wednesday and Friday.
4.The supermarket and shops
The next thing to check is where you should buy food and other things that you need. Some popular supermarkets for food and drink include Jumbo, Albert Heijn, Aldi, Jans Linder, Lidl,… For stationery and household appliances, you can visit Action, Hema, and Blokker. For clothing, there are many fashion brands and shopping mall in the city center, namely Zara, Bershka, H&M, Hudson Bay,…
When you already identify all the places you will visit in the next days, the question now is “How can you get there?”. Have you got any means of transportation? A car? A bike? Or will you just walk? Or will you use the bus? If you want to use the bus, you should purchase an OV chipkaart to save some money. If you haven’t had a bike, look for a second-hand one on facebook groups.
We hope that you will have a remarkable time in Maastricht.
